Two Evans Middle School students are facing charges after participating in a destructive social media “challenge."
The incident occurred Thursday after an Evans staff member noticed a soap dispenser taken off the wall in a bathroom and a stopped up toilet stuffed with paper towels, according to the incident report.
The missing soap dispenser was reportedly located in the backpack of a student. Another student turned over a screwdriver that was reportedly used to remove the soap dispenser and a latch plate from a bathroom stall door.
One juvenile was charged with theft by taking, while the other juvenile was charged with interference with government property and criminal trespassing, according to the police report.
The vandalism is tied to the “bathroom challenge” and “devious lick challenge” on the social media platform TikTok. Videos posted show school students across the country competing to damage or steal the most school property in one day.
The TikTok challenge is a nationwide issue, according to Dean Jackson, public information officers for the Coweta County School System.
“I don’t think there is a middle or high school across the country that hasn’t been affected by this challenge in recent weeks,” Jackson said. “But it’s not a prank. This challenge involves property damage and theft to property and there are consequences — legal, financial and disciplinary.”
Jackson encouraged parents to speak to their students about the issue.
