Downtown Boulder Partnership and Core Spaces Collaborate to Enhance Cultural Community

Four Local Artists Commissioned to Paint 105-foot-long Series of Murals

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Boulder, CO (July 9, 2020) – As part of a creative collaboration between Core Spaces, the owner of 1750 15th Street, and the Downtown Boulder Partnership (DBP), Core Spaces commissioned local artists to paint a colorful, energetic 105-foot-long series of murals. Created by four Boulder artists, Sam Cikauskas, Lael Har, Danielle DeRoberts, and Kathleen Lanzoni, the murals feature images of natural elements and human figures designed to be uplifting illustrations of the community’s resilience.  Artists were given direction to design murals that portray themes of positivity and the endurance of the local community.

As a destination well known for its community’s ingenuity and the breathtaking natural environment surrounding it, downtown Boulder is a fitting spot for public art depicting natural beauty and the tenacity of the human spirit. Cindy Sepucha, Community Development and Membership Manager of the Downtown Boulder Partnership, shares, ”The project came about after the closure of long-time business, Liquor Mart, in the space, in preparation for proposed redevelopment next year. We liked the idea of creating public engagement with the building while it is still here, especially during COVID-related closures. We thought some sunshine on one of the main corners in our downtown would be a nice reminder to locals and visitors of the creativity and vitality of the Boulder community.”

The project took a little over a week to complete. “We are really happy to be able to bring the community together and create something beautiful in collaboration with local artists and the Downtown Boulder  Partnership,” shares Chad Matesi, Chief Operating Officer of Core Spaces. “Even though this installment is temporary in nature, we hope to be able to include similar and more permanent collaborations as part of our proposed redevelopment of the site.”

The murals were recently completed on the boarded-up windows as the building awaits demolition. There are plans to continue the art installation on the North facade of the building that will honor social responsibility, humanity, and community. Core Spaces wants to be a partner in helping the Downtown Boulder Partnership explore more ways to create and expand the artist program, and more proactively identify locations for murals and public art to enhance cultural community pride and diversity.
