GARLAND, Texas — With COVID cases not slowing down, parents and schools are looking different options to make learning safe and plausible this school year.
Garland ISD is launching a parent-led temporary virtual learning (TVL) program for students pre-K through sixth grade beginning Monday, Aug. 23. The school district will review the continuation of the TVL program at the end of the first six weeks, and then every three weeks after that.
Students will be allowed to return to in-person learning at any time but are not allowed to go back and forth between the two options.
Under the temporary virtual learning program, parents will serve as at-home teachers and have full responsibility for monitoring their children’s learning. Limited office hours will be provided by Garland ISD to support parents and students in reading and math.
Different from virtual learning last year, TVL is self-paced and asynchronous, meaning those learning sessions won’t necessarily be taking place at the same time. Extracurricular activities will not be available for enrolled students.
TVL enrollment begins Thursday, Aug. 19 at 8 a.m. and closes Friday, Aug. 20 at 11:59 p.m.
