After a year of remote learning brought on by the pandemic, Ana Cabrera, a first-grade math teacher at Randolph Caldwell Elementary, used a friendly competition to close the learning gap.

Last spring, Cabrera used an app called SplashLearn, a platform that teaches young children between pre-kindergarten and fifth grade math through games. In the spring, they competed in and came in first place in a competition called SpringBoard hosted by SplashLearn.

“I received an email from the SplashLearn company letting me know that my class was in the first place, so I checked it out,” Cabrera said. “I noticed they were in the first 10 places statewide. I told my students we're competing against other students and maybe we can win first place in the nation.”

Cabrera would display the dashboard showing her students’ placement in the competition.

“The app was very easy to use,” Cabrera said. “The students tried to beat their classmates. It was a very good outcome.”

The app featured individualized learning, so students could advance at their own pace.

“The students could use the kindergarten curriculum if they need, or they can use the second-grade curriculum if they're more advanced,” Cabrera said. “That built a foundation for those who were behind. Once they get confident in building their skills, they could move on to first grade.”
