Garland County's infection curve is down 19% from the non-winter peak reached Aug. 12, but the county's health officer told the Hot Springs/Garland County COVID-19 Task Force Monday there's more work to do.
"It's good that our numbers are coming down, but if we look back to where we were a year ago, we had 166 active cases," Dr. Gene Shelby, according to a city of Hot Springs news release, said. "So we are down, but we still have (795 active cases), which is more than five times as many cases as this time last year, and our hospitals continue to have a lot of COVID patients and deaths."
According to the release, CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs and National Park Medical Center reported a total of 85 COVID-19 patients in their hospitals Monday, down from the 98 reported a week earlier. They reported 29 COVID patients in their intensive care units. NPMC said all nine of the COVID patients in its ICU weren't fully vaccinated when they were admitted.
The two hospitals reported a total of 14 COVID deaths last week.
Data reported by the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement showed as of early last week new known infections over a 14-day period represented at least 1% of the populations within the boundaries of four area school districts. The 125 new known cases per 10,000 residents within the boundaries of the Mountain Pine School District was the highest per capita rate in the county, followed by the 114 per 10,000 residents in the Cutter Morning Star District.
