Rhode Island doctors urge people not to participate in dangerous social media challenges - Turn to 10

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — The social media app TikTok is banning the so-called "milk crate challenge" after people have fallen and gotten seriously injured.

Rhode Island Hospital said it's seen its share of injuries as a result.

The milk crate challenge is when people stack unattached, unstable plastic milk boxes in the form of a pyramid and climb them like stairs while being recorded.

Since the #milkcratechallenge gained attention on social media, many have been trying to do it on camera, sometimes resulting in serious injury.

In a video obtained by NBC 10 News, a man is seen participating in the challenge and falling off the crates. He suffered a very serious injury that resulted in surgery on his arm.

Dr. Mark Zonfrillo, a pediatric emergency medicine physician and injury researcher at Hasbro Children's Hospital, said he's seen a few cases of children coming in as a result.

He said people need to think before participating in viral competitions.

"It could've been much more sever with this type of milk crate challenge you could certainly see broken bones in the arms or legs you could also get a head injury or even a spinal cord injury," said Zonfrillo. "Certainly, milk crates that are stacked up and not connected together are very unstable and it's not worth it it's not worth the ten seconds of fame or the likes online."

Zonfrillo said this wasn't the first and won't be the last social media challenge.
