FRISCO — Kalib Hicks had already run for two touchdowns and 103 yards in the first half. But, with four minutes before the intermission, the Denton Ryan junior running back wanted to add to that total.

So, on one of his final carries of the half, he spun twice at the line of scrimmage, broke to the outside and scampered for an 18-yard touchdown. It was that particular score that gave Ryan a 20-point lead. It was also Hicks’ overall performance — 139 yards and three touchdowns — that allowed Ryan to cruise past Longview 40-7 to open the season at The Star in Frisco.

“Didn’t expect this (big of a) win,” Ryan coach Dave Henigan said. “It kind of snowballed in the second quarter.”

Beyond the semantics of a blowout win, Hicks’ game underscored something bigger for the defending 5A state champions. Denton Ryan, even without its three-year starting quarterback, had plenty of firepower to remain a state power in 2021.

The entire game played out a case study as to why Ryan, while it will miss Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan, will still find ways to win with the rest of a supporting crew. It returns 14 starters from last year.

The Ryan defense alone accounted for two touchdowns and five turnovers. Garyreon Robinson returned an interception for a 49-yard touchdown. Before that, Michael Gee blocked a punt and then fell into the endzone.

Khalon Davis, Henigan’s replacement, was not asked to do much. He finished 6-of-9 passing for 84 yards.

“The guys we lost got a lot of the attention, and deservedly so,” Henigan said. “But the guys coming back are, if not elite, very good high school football players and that showed.”

Longview, after briefly tying the game at seven on Jordan Allen’s 46-yard run, allowed Ryan to score 33 unanswered points.

“This was as bad as it gets,” Longview head coach John King said. “We’ll see what we have now because people tend to scatter after a loss like this.”
