CD17 to host meeting about Hot Springs history - Hot Springs Sentinel

The Col. John Washington Chapter Colonial Dames 17th Century's Sept. 16 meeting, luncheon and program will be open to the public with a paid reservation, according to chapter President Belinda Jones, of Benton.

The meeting will be held at Hot Springs Country Club. A short meeting will start at 10:30 a.m., followed by a presentation by author Mike Blythe at 11 a.m., then lunch.

Blythe is the author of "Then & Now: Hot Springs Arkansas," published by the Garland County Historical Society, which a news release from CD17 notes has received "rave reviews."

"Then & Now" gives a unique perspective on Hot Springs, the release said.

Blythe, a 42-year resident of Hot Springs, a graduate of University of Arkansas and a retiree of Entergy Arkansas Inc., has been a volunteer at the Garland County Historical Society for many years. Inspired by a "then and now" photograph book of New York City scenes, he decided Hot Springs would be an ideal subject for a "then and now" book.

"Blythe has stated retaking these photographs gave him an all-new respect for photographers of the past. Using copies of old photographs, he searched for the exact spots where the original photographers stood. Sometimes standing in the middle of Central Avenue, other times climbing to the rooftops of old buildings. He stated while climbing old fire escapes he could only imagine how the old photographers managed with their heavy, cumbersome equipment," the release said.
