Let Plano have chickens - The Dallas Morning News

Egg-citement is building in Plano as the city council there is considering an ordinance that would allow residents to own chickens. We’re in favor of this action as long as the city can peck out the right details.

Chickens occupy a unique place in city regulations. Rural areas and small towns typically have no restrictions on chickens. According to a comparative analysis of city ordinances by a group called Plano Hens Action Team, exurbs like Sachse and Fairview have the most generous limits or no limits at all on the number of chickens a resident can raise. Suburban cities tend to be more strict. Coppell and Plano forbid all chickens. Addison allows three birds per property. In Garland it’s four. But in Dallas, there’s no maximum.

Currently in Plano, hens are allowed only on agricultural and estate properties larger than 1.95 acres. Though the language hasn’t been finalized, the proposed change would relax those restrictions, but would likely still include rules about suitable coops, a maximum number of birds, noise and smell limitations, and city permitting. The change would also not supersede HOA rules and deed restrictions that may prevent chickens. And roosters will not be allowed at all.

There is, apparently, a lot of cooped up energy around this issue. Plano Hens has collected 2,433 signatures on a petition in favor of the change.
