NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Nelson County Public Schools will be closed again on Monday as authorities look into “very serious and concerning” threats on social media involving violence toward the schools, according to the district.

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook on Sunday, Aug. 29 that there have been numerous reports about the social media messages involving school safety being circulated and that personnel are actively investigating the matter, trying to track down all sources of the messages.

Then, on Monday, Aug. 30, Nelson County Public Schools announced that the district would be closed for the day while county authorities are “working to investigate threats on social media regarding violence toward our schools.”

If you have any information regarding these threats, you are asked to contact the sheriff’s office.

This news comes just days after the school district was closed on Friday, Aug. 27 due to a number of factors, including a confrontation at the high school, an increase in coronavirus activity in both the county and the school community, and concerns about the current heat wave.

According to school officials, while law enforcement officers were at the Nelson County High School campus for an unrelated event on Thursday, Aug. 26, they disrupted a fight between two students. Then, another student became confrontational while in the authorities’ presence and was detained.
