If you’re not a biker, you really hate those new bike lanes. You think they take up too much of the road, they’re in the most inconvenient places, and you seldom see anyone using them. If you’re a biker, you think it’s about time somebody paid attention to your safety and convenience; you think there are far from enough bike lanes; and the two reasons you don’t use them more are that they’re not continuous and they’re still dangerous because vehicles ignore them. If you’re in the first group, you probably aren’t going to be happy with today’s news, but if you’re in the second group, it’ll come as a big relief. In early August Governor Phil Murphy signed a law adding bike lanes to the things drivers must move over for. Drivers can no longer grumble that those darn bikers ought to get out of their way, now it is legally required drivers get out of the way. Drivers must move over to avoid scooters and pedestrians, too. But I think drivers always had a little more respect for walkers than they did for men and women on motorcycles, scooters or bicycles. Maybe some were cautious around motorcycles because those riders had a reputation for being folks you didn’t want to mess with. However, people on ordinary bikes and scooters were vulnerable in every way.
