Mosaic opponents take to social media against New Wales gypstack extension - The Ledger

LAKELAND – Opponents of an expansion to the New Wales phosphogypsum stack in Mulberry have taken to social media to share their opposition to Mosaic Fertilizer LLC’s plans to continue phosphate operations at the facility.

The first post to Wake Up Desoto was a livestream from an open house last week at the RP Funding Center, where Florida residents questioned Mosaic and Florida Department of Environmental Protection officials about the extension application. The plant operates under a 2018 permit renewal.

Most residents posted comments that their questions were not sufficiently answered about the risk of sinkholes nor how the company and the state plan to deal with the gypstacks in the 100 years after mining stops.

Many of the Facebook posts on the Wake Up Desoto page identified the stack that Mosaic wants to expand as the same one that

An FDEP subsidence incident report, which was recently revised on Aug. 5 and does not identify Mosaic, confirmed the stack is in the same location: Area IV within the Mosaic New Wales facility.

In addition to Wake Up Desoto, the Facebook page #Nosaic posted and shared memes and further opposition to Mosaic, including a link to a documentary film about Florida’s phosphate mining industry entitled, “Phosfate.”
