Cuban Doctors Use Social Media to Protest Conditions During Pandemic | The Takeaway - WNYC Studios

At the end of July, The Takeaway checked in on Cuba after historic demonstrations erupted across the country where thousands were protesting the severe economic crisis, the mismanagement of the pandemic, and government restrictions on civil liberties and freedoms.

Since then, the Cuban government has cracked down on dissenters, arresting more than 800 Cubans in the days and weeks after the July protests, according to Cuba-lex, an NGO tracking the arrests.

As the country’s healthcare system struggles to keep up, Cuban healthcare workers have been posting videos on social media in an unprecedented form of online protest, criticizing the government’s response to the pandemic on the island.

In return, the Cuban government passed a law trying to crack down on dissent online prohibiting “fake news” and postings that damage the state’s “prestige.”

The Takeaway talks with Patrick Oppmann, a CNN International Correspondent and the Havana Bureau Chief, about what’s happening in Cuba right now.
