In a statement released by Roy McTaggart, the Leader of the Opposition has accused Tourism Minister, Kenneth Bryan for "playing games with the public" as per comments made by Mr Bryan on a publicly aired radio show, that he was using "scare tactics" to get displaced tourism workers to look for jobs, when he said earlier this year that he would halve the tourism stipend from $1500 to $750.
According to Mr McTaggart, "This is an incredulous admission from the tourism minister. The Minister and his government have seemingly committed a cruel hoax on Caymanians who found themselves needing assistance during a global pandemic through no fault of their own. No different to the many hundreds of Caymanians who received other forms of COVID-19 related assistance from the government, including access to free quarantine facilities."
Mr McTaggart has argued that Mr Bryan's comments "caused many Caymanian stipend recipients unnecessary added stress and concern as to how they would manage their financial affairs after October, in the runup to the Christmas holidays."
Premier, Wayne Panton has responded, defending the Tourism Minister, stating that he is doing a great job and advising that the PACT Government plans to continue the COVID-19 tourism worker stipend until it is no longer needed as addressed in the Government Strategic Policy Statement.
