Do you use social media to keep in touch with your friends or stay up to date with your favorite celebrity? Social media has become a universal tool whether it allows people to develop/start a business or try to make unique foods. But that does not make it an ideal place to be.
Approximately 72% of Americans have some sort of a social media account, many of whom are young adults or teens. As a teenager using social media, I know the dangers that come with social media.
Social media can endanger people in more ways than one. Distracted driving is common among our society, with one in five people checking their phones because they received a social media notification while driving. Authorities say there are around 400 deaths every year related to distracted driving.
Viral social media challenges and trends also have resulted in deaths and caused serious injuries. Recently, the Babyswing challenge began this year in late July when adults/teens got themselves stuck inside of a baby swing. This challenge took firefighters’ time when they could be saving someone in imminent danger. It destroyed the park’s equipment since they had to cut through the swing to get them out. The Birdbox challenge is another recent fad where people were blindfolded while doing dangerous activities, and the Tide Pod challenge led people to consume detergent pods.
When names, birthdays, locations, and other information are exposed online, it can put people in danger. I accept...
