4 p.m. The cumulative number of positive COVID-19 cases in public school students across Texas increased by 90 percent last week, state data shows. Last week alone, there were 27,353 COVID cases reported in students.

8:45 a.m. One week after hitting an eight-month peak, COVID-19 hospitalizations in Texas have slowed, though it's still unclear whether the slowdown is evidence the region has entered an expected plateau phase of the pandemic's fourth wave.

On Wednesday, Houston recorded 13,790 hospitalizations - a 1 percent drop from last Wednesday when the city had its most cases in a single day since mid-January with 13,932 hospitalizations.
