In response to the ongoing lockdowns in New South Wales caused by COVID-19, the Personal Injury Commission (PIC) medical assessor reference group has identified various injury types across certain categories of medical disputes that may be suitable for assessment on the papers or combined with a video assessment/teleconference (paper assessments), instead of an in-person medical assessment.
For certain types of medical dispute matters that are currently scheduled for an in-person appointment with a medical assessor, the parties can apply to have the medical dispute proceed to a paper assessment. All parties to the dispute, including the medical assessor, must agree that the assessment can proceed by way of a paper assessment, and the documentation required for the dispute type is provided for the paper assessment.
If the medical assessor is unable to assess the matter on the papers, the in-person assessment will be scheduled once Public Health Orders allow.

Submissions are to be made via the Motor Accidents Portal. Submissions must include:
• How the injury meets the criteria.
• Evidence of agreement or consent of both parties to submit the matter for inclusion in this process.
• The claimant’s e-mail address and telephone number.
• Assurance that the claimant will be able to independently participate in a videoconference or teleconference in accordance with Public Health Orders.
