In order to hear the concerns of residents living in the affordable housing community in July Street, Windsor Park, Minister of Housing, Jay Ebanks, accompanied by Minister of Tourism, Kenneth Bryan, met with residents on Wednesday evening. Community Leader, Alric Lindsay was also present.
The National Housing Development Trust is known in the Cayman Islands for handling applications for persons wishing to purchase affordable homes in various parts of Grand Cayman. One of these developments is located in July Street, Windsor Park.
Commencing the meeting, Romellia Welcome, a community activist, invited Dr Frank McField, a former minister of government responsible for housing, to give a summary of the background of the affordable housing scheme built on July Street.
“We realized that when we started the Housing and Community Development Trust that people were talking about housing and the need for housing for people who were operating at a special income level… but the income level was just one of the issues. The other issues were the educational and social outlook of people,” Dr McField explained.
"The outcome of the project was to create “community ownership, not just home ownership,” Dr McField continued.
