Additional $8 million in scholarships includes A-level studies | Loop Cayman Islands - Loop News Cayman

The Finance Committee, chaired by Deputy Premier Chris Saunders, approved an increase of $8 million for local and overseas scholarships and bursaries last Wednesday, September 1. According to the Minister for Education, Juliana O'Connor-Connolly, this will cover various categories of scholarships, including the Cayman Scholar (to be awarded to the top male and female student who will each receive a scholarship of up to $100,000 per annum), basic education scholarships, funding for students pursuing their master’s degrees, PhD and A-level programmes.

Regarding the $8 million being sought, the Leader of the Opposition, Roy McTaggart noted that “this is almost a doubling of the appropriations for scholarships and bursaries” and queried how much of the number relates to new scholarships.

The Minister for Education clarified that “about 56% per cent is for pre-payment for Spring term of next year” for students resuming classes in the first week of January.

She elucidated the point to the Leader of the Opposition by articulating that payment for classes on a timely basis was being done to ensure a smooth transition back to the school for students and “negates those possibilities that they lose classes or…preference as to the best professors in the school.”

Another part of this almost appearance of doubling is that, when we were doing budgeting the last time, I believe I am correct in saying that we got ten million and we had requested fifteen million. Basically, fifty per cent...
