Art, kindness and social media propel Cape Cod Land Shark success - Cape Cod Times

BREWSTER – The growth of Michelle “Sunshine” Singleton’s business, Cape Cod Land Sharks, could very well be a model for how to grow a brand in the age of social media.

She’s the skills and talent to produce a unique product, a philosophy to support it, and a means of showcasing it on social media where she had 5,363 Instagram followers. In two years, the 42-year-old Brewster woman has found a way to work full time as an artist, doing what she loves.

Singleton makes signs and art from reclaimed wood.

She has drawn mermaids, sharks, whales and sea turtles, cutting them from pine and cedar, mostly, using a scroll saw to cut around her hand-drawn images. She planes, sands, and paints them. She covers them with epoxy resin. If she wants to create a watery effect, she'll tint the epoxy resin white and use a blow torch to create a wind/wave effect. Sometimes she adds sand from Paine's Creek Beach, near where she lives.

Two years is only the tip of the story iceberg, of course. It’s taken Singleton a lifetime to come to the point where her wooden sharks, whales, mermaids, and signs have brought her a loyal following.

Singleton worked as an architectural designer for 20 years. She’d gotten into architecture and design because she’s always been creative. She got her master's degree from the Boston Architectural College. But the work had stopped bringing her joy.
