Minister of Health and Wellness, Sabrina Turner has advised that since February 2021, the Cayman Islands has recorded 325 positive cases of COVID-19-- 81 per cent of these cases were in unvaccinated travellers.
This amounts to 263 unvaccinated travellers testing positive for COVID-19 since February 2021 and 62 vaccinated travellers testing positive. This is a significant finding given the fact that the majority of the Caymanian public has received the Pfizer vaccination since its introduction on January 29 this year.
As of today, September 8, there have been 102,399 COVID-19 vaccinations given in total in the Cayman Islands. Of these, 52,433 (74 per cent of 71,106) have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 49,966 (70 per cent) have completed the two-dose course.
Globally, the statistics surrounding vaccination have been highly encouraging. According to a recent study, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is 96 per cent effective against hospitalisation after 2 doses, for vaccinated individuals who have contracted the Delta variant of COVID-19.
"The evidence in support of the COVID vaccine is conclusive," said Minister Turner.
Premier Panton has implored the remaining members of the population who have not yet been vaccinated to do so. Those who are being vaccinated for the first time must do so tomorrow, as vaccines expire at the end of October and borders are scheduled to open on October 14.
