A politician asked me what I thought would make a voter happy enough to vote for him in an election. The politician then asked what it would take to keep a voter happy enough to vote for him again in future elections.

Having witnessed several campaign strategies executed and elections play out for years, I appreciate that there are many moving parts. Understanding the significance of each component and how that is different for each voter or group of voters is critical.

Even if correctly quantified, however, what makes a voter ultimately caste his or her vote depends on how a candidate makes that voter feel. This theory has been taken as far as making a formal hypothesis that there is a causal link between the happiness of a person and how he or she votes.

According to the World Happiness Report (the "Report"), “the question has been asked in 310 national surveys in 103 countries since the early 1980s, alongside a 4-point overall happiness question.”

The data (derived from the World Values Survey) represented in a diagram in the Report shows that very unhappy people are more unlikely to be involved in politics, whilst happier people are more likely to do so. However, at higher levels of happiness, this correlation flattens off.
