The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) said that it continues to monitor drivers who are putting themselves and other road users in danger while such drivers are distracted from the road while using their mobile phones.
Since August 11, the operations of the RCIPS have yielded a total of 80 tickets which have been issued to drivers who were found using their mobile phones while driving. The RCIPS intends to continue to conduct operations to target such drivers.
“These persons are now facing a fine of $150 each,” says Chief Inspector Malcolm Kay. “This is money they could have saved if they had followed the rules of the road, and shows that using a phone while driving is not only dangerous, but potentially expensive. While the number of tickets we have issued in the past month shows how prevalent this practice is, we hope our efforts will be effective in deterring motorists from continuing to take this risk.
The RCIPS said that it continues to encourage everyone to do their part to “Make the Cayman Islands Safer” by not using mobile phones while driving, or engaging in any other forms of distracted driving.
