Travel Cayman reported 52 breaches of quarantine in August | Loop Cayman Islands - Loop News Cayman

According to Minister of Health and Wellness, Sabrina Turner, Travel Cayman the cross-ministerial project with authority over travel management, travel support, health screening, monitoring and compliance associated with incoming travel during border closure, reported some 52 quarantine breaches by quarantining travellers during the month of August.

According to Minister Turner, the nature and severity of these breaches has differed greatly. The report however warranted a review of the quarantine surveillance system and changes were made as a result.

According to Minister Turner, who made the announcement at a September 8 press briefing, Travel Cayman has since changed some of its policies and procedures and is reconsidering moving back to a system of GPS tracking of travellers.

Since October 2020, tracking bracelets were being issued to travellers at the airport before quarantine, alerting authorities when the device is taken off or if wearers breach their COVID-19 quarantine. This system was discontinued for vaccinated travellers on August 9 2021.

Travel Cayman currently monitors a hotline which the public can call to report a suspected quarantine breach at 943-7233 (943 SAFE).

Members of the public and travellers who are found to be in breach of the mandatory quarantine provisions will be warned for intended prosecution and are liable on conviction to a fine of up to CI$10,000 and imprisonment for up to two years.
