At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) suggested a number of safety tips that should be considered during a country's border reopening process.

These were described as operational and staff preparedness, delivering a safe experience, rebuilding trust & confidence and implementing enabling policies.

Operational and staff preparedness

Since tour operators work on the front line, the WTTC suggested that various precautions be taken day to day operational procedures. Some of these include:

  • Implementation of a COVID action plan – much like a fire drill, where staff have a checklist and employers frequently go over immediate steps to be taken in case of the appearance of COVID symptoms or actual community spread
  • Asking staff members to complete regular health checks for the purpose of their own health and exposure to customers
  • Allowing staff to work from home where possible. This may be practically difficult for workers in the tourism industry where actual, physical interaction may be required to execute services. However, there may be staff
  • Practice physical distancing in common areas, on tour buses and on tours
  • Bearing in mind health concerns for particular individuals, make available masks or other precautions suggested by COVID regulations
  • Encourage online payment or contactless payment for services
