UK approves COVID-19 boosters; final decisions on programme pending | Loop Cayman Islands - Loop News Cayman

The UK’s medicines watchdog, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has said the Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca vaccines are safe to use as booster jabs to be used as third shots to tackle potentially waning immunity.

This is excellent news for the Cayman Islands which was waiting for the approval from the UK as a prerequisite for its own booster programme.

A booster programme is imminent if the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) gives the go-ahead.

Members of the JCVI met on Thursday, with a decision on who should get a third booster shot expected in the coming days.

It has already said a third dose should be offered to people with severely weakened immune systems.

The approval of both Pfizer and AstraZeneca jabs came on the day Public Health England announced vaccines have now prevented 112,300 deaths.

Previous estimates had put the number at 105,900.

Pfizer boosters can be given to anyone, regardless of which doses they had previously.

Pfizer has said that it believes a third shot of vaccine will be needed to maintain protection, although executives at AstraZeneca, who are not making a profit on the vaccine during the pandemic, have stressed the need to wait for evidence and not pursue booster programmes that are not needed.
