Death by intentional self-directed injury, suicide, amid young people accounts for one-third of all suicides globally. (Campisi et. al. 2020)

Suicidal behaviour includes ideation (thinking about killing oneself), planning suicide, attempting suicide and completed suicide. Examination of determinants of suicidal behaviour within this vulnerable age group is critical to its prevention and early intervention.

The 2020 Cayman Island Student Drug Use Survey (CISDUS) report contains alarming figures about suicidal thoughts and attempts by children in the Cayman Islands.

According to the findings of the CISDUS, 9 per cent of Cayman's young people reported attempting to end their own lives, with a significant discrepancy between boys (2.7 per cent) and girls (14.4 per cent). Almost 18 per cent of respondents have contemplated suicide.

The 2020 report reveals significantly lower numbers than previous CISDUS reports and studies conducted by external organizations such as the Alex Panton Foundation and the Pan American Health Organization.

According to the 2018 CISDUS, 34 per cent of students reported seriously considering suicide while 13 per cent reported actual suicide attempts.

Prevention

It is imperative for caregivers to learn the warning signs of a young person who is contemplating or has contemplated suicide-- many adults simply write off red flags as symptomatic of puberty or normal teenage angst.
