Governor Martyn Roper and his wife, Lissie hosted a reception on Wednesday night (September 8) at Government House to celebrate International Literacy Day and the work of LIFE Cayman, a non-profit organisation supporting reading in Cayman’s public schools.

The theme of International Literacy Day 2021 is “Literacy for a human-centred recovery: narrowing the digital divide.”

“Learning reading skills at a very early age is so important to all our children. Many thanks to Juliet Austin, Chief Executive and Woody Foster, Board Chair, for all that you do for our children,” said the Governor.

Since 2012, LIFE Cayman has provided almost 50,000 books to local schools, with a network of 150 volunteers who go into schools to build reading skills and interest in books. LIFE Cayman also provided support to the community during lock down.

Of the actions taken to support Cayman’s youth during the pandemic, LIFE Board Member, Anthony Cowell, observed, “Never before have we witnessed educational disruption on such a scale.”

When the entire student population of Cayman was affected by school closures and the shift to learning online, businessman Taylor Foster spearheaded LIFE’s ‘call to action’ to bridge the digital divide and support schools in scaling up their inclusive distance learning practices.
