49ers RB Raheem Mostert's wife Devon says family received 'gut-wrenching' comments after injury - USA TODAY

Devon Mostert, the wife of San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert, said she appreciates "outpouring of love and support" her family has received following her husband's season-ending knee surgery.

"2 nights ago while rocking our littlest boy to sleep, I made a statement about how gut-wrenching 'fans' comments and direct messages can be," she wrote. "Let's all be honest. If words didn't carry any meaning, we, as a human race, wouldn't speak. Words carry weight and we have to do better as a society."

Mostert alluded to comments she made on her Instagram page Sunday night, when she said fans messaged her "heartless" messages about "how my husband should kill himself" following the injury he suffered after just his second carry during the 49ers' 41-33 win over the Detroit Lions, multiple media outlets reported.

The running back was a key part of San Francisco's run to Super Bowl LIV, but spent much of last season dealing with a high-ankle sprain, playing in only eight games.

Mostert also recognized September being National Suicide Prevention Month and told her followers what is said on social media can greatly impact someone.

"Yes, it's a difficult time for my family right now, but it's a difficult time for EVERYONE. We're still in the middle of a global pandemic where mental distress is at an all time high.

"Rethink what you're about to post and retrain your brain to think about who you could potentially hurt with your words," she said.
