While there are many benefits of social media, there are equally some negatives such as cyberbullying, its effect on one’s self-esteem and overall mental health. Similar to many things in life the key is balance. Though, with social media, that is often easier said than done.

That doesn’t mean it's impossible, here are some tips to create some boundaries with your social media use.

  1. Schedule times for your social media use

Using social media for a specific period of time is a great way to reduce your social media use. Choose a time that suits you but try to avoid using it as you wake up. You can also use time limits for the apps on your phone and browser, this is especially useful if you think the amount of time you spend on the apps is affecting your work and social interactions.

Equally, you can schedule device breaks, these are times of your day or week where you completely disengage with your phone and also don’t have it near you.

  1. Check-in with yourself before you open the app

A lot of social media users use it mindlessly, often they open and scroll, sometimes without even noticing, they did that. One of the best ways to curb this is by checking in with yourself when you notice yourself opening up the app.
