School restrooms vandalized in latest social media 'challenge' - newschannel20.com

TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — Schools around the country are dealing with a huge uptick in vandalism, specifically to bathrooms all tied to a social media challenge.

The Taylorville Police Department is now asking parents to speak with their children about the challenge.

They say the challenge encourages kids to steal and destroy school property, more specifically restrooms.

The challenge, mostly on the platform "TikTok", consists of students dumping red dye all over toilets and sinks.

Other times, whole sinks and toilets have been destroyed.

And in some cases, fire extinguishers and other property are stolen.

Taylorville Police remind residents that damage to school property is a Class 4 felony.

If convicted, the child will not only face consequences from the school but will also be arrested.

The school district will be pressing charges and the States Attorney Office will be pursuing charges for this crime, according to the Taylorville Police Department.

"This is not a laughing matter or something to be taken lightly, despite what this challenge convinces our youth of," wrote Taylorville Police Department officials. "We implore you to talk to your kids to explain how serious this can be and the effect it will have on them long term. No social media challenge is worth it. Thank you.
