July is National Minority Mental Health Month: Dr. Shareefah N. Al’Uqdah Champions Culturally Sensitive Care

Dr. Shareefah N. Al’Uqdah advocates for culturally sensitive care and shares her inspiration for entering the mental health field.

July is National Minority Mental Health Month, a time to spotlight the unique mental health challenges faced by communities of color and to advocate for equitable, culturally sensitive care.

Dr. Shareefah N. Al’Uqdah, licensed clinical psychologist, educator, and founder of Your Neighborhood Clinic, is available for interviews and expert commentary throughout the month. As an Associate Professor at Howard University and a champion for mental wellness in the Black community, Dr. Al’Uqdah brings over 20 years of experience helping individuals and families heal in ways that honor their identities.

Dr. Al’Uqdah’s commitment to mental health began early in her life. “I always wanted to be in the mental health field since I was a child. I felt connected to helping people,” she shares. “The dream really shaped in high school after having read sections of The Bell Curve, which used psychological data to argue that African Americans were inferior to other races. I wanted to learn more about the field in order to dispel racist and inaccurate beliefs.”

Her dedication to challenging stigma and promoting culturally competent care has made her a trusted voice and advocate for minority mental health.
