April 19th, 2021, NASA’s Special Day – Ingenuity, First Helicopter Fly on Mars Successfully

On the Day of April 19th, 2021, the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter made NASA so proud by taking its first flight on Mars, successfully. It has made history in NASA’s Mars space mission.

We’ve been talking for so long about our WRIGHT BROTHERS MOMENT ON MARS, but now we can now say that human beings have flown a rotorcraft on another planet,” said MIMI Aung, project Manager for Ingenuity at NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California.

NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Made History On Mars:

It is the first powered-controlled flight on another planet. It’s the six-wheeled vehicle; will now spend at least the next two years drilling into the local rocks, looking for evidence of past life.

Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Specialities

  • The drone called Ingenuity was airborne for less than a minute

  • Ingenuity was therefore made extremely light and given the power (peak power of 350 watts) to help the blades to rotate extremely fast at over 2,500 revolutions per minute for this particular flight.

  • Controls were autonomous, the distance to Mars currently just under 300 million km.

  • Ingenuity has two cameras on board. A black and white camera that points down to the ground used for navigation and the other high-resolution color camera looks out to the horizon. A selfie of the ingenuity helicopter and the perseverance rover was taken and sent back home.

  • It contains no science instruments inside its tissue-box-size fuselage. Instead, the 4-pound(1.8-kg) rotorcraft is intended to demonstrate whether future exploration of the Red Planet could include an aerial perspective [1].

  • A helicopter was parked about 211 feet (64.3 meters)away at Vanzyl overlook (it attempts at powered controlled flight at mars is called ‘VANZYL OVERLOOK)

  • The ingenuity team at the agency’s jet propulsion laboratory in southern California confirmed the flight succeeded after receiving data from the helicopter via NASA’s perseverance mars rover at 6:46 a.m. EDT (3:46 a.m. PDT) [2].

  • The helicopter contains a unique component, as well as off-the-shelf commercial parts, as many are from the smartphone industry, that was tested in deep space for the first time, with this mission.

What Is The Purpose Of The Perseverance Rover?

Perseverance’s mission on mars is astrobiology including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet’s geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet and be the first mission to collect and cache martin rock and regolith (broken rock and dust).

Who Built Ingenuity for NASA?

“Ingenuity was built by JPL, also manages the technology demonstrates the project for NASA. It is JPL, which built Ingenuity, also manages the technology demonstration project for NASA. It is supported by NASA’s Science, Aeronautics, and Space Technology mission directorates.” [3]

NASA team has made it possible with their brilliance by landing it successfully even though the atmosphere is thin over there and huge change in gravity compared to the Earth’s atmosphere. This mars helicopter project has gone from blue sky feasibility study to workable engineering concept to achieving the first flight on another world in a little over six years” said Michael Watkins, Director of JPL.
