Barbra Streisand has one of the greatest voices of all time. But she doesn't always like to hear it.
"I don't listen to my records and I don't watch my movies," Streisand tells USA TODAY. "I like to live in the present."
The eight-time Grammy winner made an exception for "Release Me 2" (out now), which features 10 previously unreleased songs recorded between 1962 and 2014. The extraordinary collection includes new versions of classics written by Carole King ("You Light Up My Life") and Randy Newman ("Living Without You"), as well as duets with Willie Nelson, Kermit the Frog and the Bee Gees' Barry Gibb.
Streisand compiled the album during the COVID-19 lockdown this past year, as she was also working on her upcoming memoir.
"What was going on in the country was horrific," she says. "But in terms of being able to concentrate without having to attend events or have people over, it was a very contemplative time. I was able to focus on my book, which I have been writing for many, many years. It's good I had journals to remind myself of so many things because I've turned down offers to write a book for probably 40 years.
"Forty years?" she pauses. "Time is going so fast, it's unbelievable."
Streisand, 79, and her husband, actor James Brolin, were vaccinated for COVID-19 earlier this year, and the Oscar-winning "Funny Girl" star continues to encourage others to do so through her active presence on Twitter.
