Masks required for Garland ISD schools, facilities and buses under new Dallas County COVID-19 order - The Dallas Morning News

Garland ISD will abide by Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins’ executive order requiring masks inside schools, businesses and county buildings, the district said Wednesday in a news release.

Masks will be required for Garland ISD campuses, facilities and buses as of Thursday morning, regardless of vaccination status, the district said.

Jenkins’ order comes after a Dallas judge issued a temporary restraining order late Tuesday restricting the enforcement of Gov. Greg Abbott’s ban on mask mandates.

School districts, including Dallas and Fort Worth, and local governments across the state had already lined up to defy the governor’s order.

Before Jenkins’ announcement, Garland ISD was not requiring masks for the school year, which started Aug. 2.

Jenkins said he worked with school superintendents; the owners of restaurants, bars and stores; and others when crafting the order.

But the new local rules face staunch opposition from Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is preparing to mount a legal fight against any entity that adopts mask mandates.
