Garland police are sending a clear message to residents: If you drink and drive, you risk going to jail.
The Garland Police Department is stepping up its driving while intoxicated patrols beginning Aug. 20 through Labor Day on Sept. 6.
Both marked and unmarked police cars will patrol the city in nighttime hours, the Garland Police Department said in a release.
Officers will apply for blood search warrants for any drivers who refuse to consent to giving a specimen of their breath or blood when arrested for DWI-related offenses, the release stated.
Convicted first-time D.W.I. offenders can face a fine of up to $2,000, lose their driver’s license for up to a year and serve up to 180 days in jail. DWI offenders may also face state fines ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 upon sentencing. Drivers may also be fined up to $10,000 and be charged with child endangerment if they drive while intoxicated with a child passenger in the car.
In 2020, the Texas Department of Transportation reported 1,860 DWI-related motor vehicle crashes in Dallas County that resulted in minor to fatal injuries.
“Let’s do our part and drive smart,” the release states.
