Tropical Storm Ida forms Southeast of Grand Cayman Islands - WCTI12.com

NEW BERN, Craven County — Tropical Depression Nine was upgraded Thursday to Tropical Storm Ida.

Ida is about 100 miles Southeast of the Grand Cayman Islands.

Ida will cross over the Caymans Thursday night and has 40 mile per hour winds and is moving Northwest at 14 miles per hour.

"The storm will strengthen Saturday as Ida moves into the Gulf of Mexico. Ida will move across Cuba Friday night and into the Southeastern Gulf of Mexico Saturday morning," said WCTI12 Chief Meteorologist Donnie Cox. "Ida could become a hurricane quickly, maybe by early afternoon Saturday.”

The storm should gain strength over the weekend and has the potential to become a Category-2 storm.

There is a possibility of seeing the system being near a major hurricane before making landfall.

Ida is targeting the Louisiana Coast and possibly the Mississippi Coast.

The forecast track will take the storm North through Louisiana and Mississippi early next week.

The forecast models indicate the remnants of Ida may move East and could increase rain chances in our area mid to late next week.

Our StormTrack 12 meteorologists are always tracking the tropics for the latest information.
