AUSTIN — Much hype surrounded Friday’s matchup between Austin Lake Travis and Arlington Martin, as the season opener featured two of the state’s top programs.

In the end, though, it was six-time state champion Lake Travis that emerged with a 40-28 win over the Dallas-area powerhouse.

Early on, it became obvious as to why many were excited to see the two teams square off. With four minutes to go in the first quarter, Lake Travis’ Caleb Burton, an Ohio State football commit, reeled in a 41-yard touchdown pass from Isaac Norris.

Martin’s Javien Toviano would quickly respond, going the full distance on the ensuing kickoff. Toviano, another highly-rated recruit, received looks on offense, defense, and special teams.

Aside from the two explosive plays, the game quickly shifted to a defensive showcase. Martin’s Ernest Cooper forced a strip sack fumble on Lake Travis quarterback Bo Edmundson that resulted in a safety.

And with six minutes to play in the first half, Martin found the end zone again on Trey Cochran’s 10-yard reception from Cydd Ford. The score gave the Warriors their first lead of the game 14-10.

On the following possession, the Cavaliers capitalized on 30 yards worth of penalties committed by the Warriors. Lake Travis receiver Isaac Norris went up for an impressive 18-yard score from Edmundson.

From that point on, it was all Lake Travis. A Martin defense that was stout early on, began to show vulnerability, allowing big plays the rest of the game.

Derrick Johnson, who is listed as a linebacker and running back, was responsible for many of those plays. Johnson caught a 64-yard score from Edmundson in the first half, and broke loose on runs of 52 and 60 in the second half.
