A chimpanzee at the Dallas Zoo died Wednesday from heart-related illness or distress.
In a Facebook post, the zoo said that 31-year-old Kirk stopped breathing just before the caretakers’ rounds at the end of the day. Caretakers began to administer life-saving measures, but he had already passed away.
The zoo said the chimpanzee didn’t show any signs of illness in the days or weeks before he died. An autopsy revealed his cause of death, the zoo said.
“Kirk was known as a sweet chimp who loved to eat carrots and energetically gallop around the habitat. He will be dearly missed,” the zoo’s Facebook post reads.
In the wild, chimpanzees live about 45 years, while they can live 50 or more years in captivity, according to National Geographic and The Center for Great Apes.
Heart disease is a major cause of death for great apes, which include gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans. Heart disease is particularly a problem with males, the zoo said.
To stay ahead of heart-related illnesses, the zoo said it performs routine wellness checks, closely monitors its great ape population and participates with the Great Ape Heart Project, an organization based at Zoo Atlanta that researches heart disease in great apes.
