Dublin city council has paid out more than 30 million over the past three years to settle personal injury claims.
Figures released under freedom of information laws show that the country’s largest local authority spent more than 33.5 million to settle 2,228 claims between 2018 and 2020. The payments, which include legal costs, were made to members of the public and council employees.
The council said the five most common types of claims settled were for trips and falls, defective premises, roads, parks and playgrounds, and potholes. However, it said it could not provide a breakdown of the number of claims by each of these categories.
In 2018, the council paid out 13.2 million to settle 731 claims. More than 12.2 million was spent settling
