Social media companies urged to stop promoting videos of cruelty to animals - Times of India

CHENNAI: A staggering amount of content put out in social media are videos of cruelty to animals. That’s why animal welfare organisations are urging social media companies to stop promoting this kind of content.
The Social Media Animal Cruelty Coalition (SMACC) of which Humane Society International (HSI) is a member, recently conducted a research project on animal cruelty being promoted on social media. The research project, which is presented in a report, gives detailed information about the kind of content being put out, in a collective effort to urge big media companies like YouTube, Facebook and others to stop profiting off animal suffering and instead take action against it by removing the content.
It found that 5,480 individual videos of animal cruelty were broadcast on YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok, and collectively viewed 5,347,809,262 times. About 77.5% of all videos were characterized as ‘obvious and intentional’ cruelty (for example: burning live animals)
The world, including India has, for years, seen a steep increase in animal cruelty cases on social media, said Alokparna Sengupta, managing director, HSI/ India. “Displaying gruesome acts of animal cruelty should never be a source of income. However, social media platforms and people on them have been profiting from this.
