Passing pickup clips woman with mirror, police say - The Altamont Enterprise

BETHLEHEM — On Monday, a Glenmont man was charged after a hit-and-run accident the week before, on Aug. 23.
William J. West, 26, was charged with leaving the scene of a personal-injury crash, a misdemeanor.
Bethlehem Police describe events unfolding this way: On the morning of Aug. 23, on Kenwood Avenue near the Bethlehem middle school, a 46-year-old woman, a pedestrian, suffered head injuries after being struck by the side mirror of a passing pickup truck, which continued traveling west.
The patient was treated on the scene by Delmar-Bethlehem Emergency Medical Services and Albany County Sheriff’s paramedics and transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital for medical treatment.
Police said, in the release, that they had pieced together what happened from witness accounts.
West was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Bethlehem Town Court on Sept. 21 at 4 p.m.
Safety advice
The release went on to remind motorists, with schools opening next week, to: watch out for bicycles and pedestrians, obey all school zone speed limits, stop for flashing school bus lights, and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
Further, parents are advised to use only school parking lots to drop off students, not to drop them off on roadways around the school.
The police also gave advice to pedestrians and bicyclists to: walk facing traffic; bike with traffic, and follow all vehicle and traffic laws, including wearing a helmet; be alert for the actions of motorists; cross...
