ELIOT, Maine — A trustee for the William Fogg Public Library who served previously as a member of the town Select Board and as chair of the Planning Board has been arrested on allegations of unlawful sexual contact at a local tavern.
Stephen Beckert was arrested Aug. 20 about 3:40 p.m., according to Eliot Police Department Sgt. Ronald Lund.
Beckert, 64, faces allegations of unlawful sexual touching, unlawful sexual contact and assault, according to police.
Two people accused Beckert of assaulting them Aug. 12 inside The 207 Tavern in Eliot, Lund said. There were numerous witnesses, and the police investigation is now complete, he said. Police said the alleged incident occurred between 6:30 and 7 p.m.
Police declined to provide details on the alleged incident and attempts to obtain documents related to the case were not immediately successful.
Beckert was released from police on the promise to appear in court and to have no contact, direct or indirect, with the people Beckert is alleged to have assaulted Lund said. Additionally, Beckert is not permitted to return to The 207 Tavern.
An arraignment is scheduled for Dec. 7, 2021, at 8:15 a.m. at York District Court, Lund said.
According to Eliot Police Chief Elliott L. Moya, under Maine Criminal Code, Beckert would be guilty of assault, a Class D level crime, which is committed if a person intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causes bodily injury or offensive physical contact to another person.
