ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — We’re not going to sugarcoat this. For years, it hasn’t been a ton of fun to be a member of the Denver Broncos. It hasn’t been much fun to follow the Denver Broncos.
That’s what a nonstop quarterback carousel, head coaching changes, four consecutive losing seasons and a five-year playoff drought will do.
But dare we say the Broncos are, gasp, fun again?
They won their three preseason games by a combined score of 80-21, the quarterback competition is (finally) settled and somehow the Broncos have managed to turn veteran defensive tackle Shelby Harris into the star of a series of eminently bingeable TikTok videos.
How did we get here?
Let’s go back to June, when the Broncos’ social media team turned a front-facing phone camera on and gave players a prompt: Which teammate would you never let date your sister? The first few players picked on second-year receiver K.J. Hamler.
But then the onslaught on Harris began.
First, it was quarterback Drew Lock. “Oh, Shelby, for sure. Definitely Shelby. After some plane rides, I would never.”
Then fellow defensive tackle Mike Purcell: “Guarantee 90 percent of the team is going to say this guy right here.”
Shelby. Shelby. Shelby.
“I’m at home! I’ve got four kids,” Harris said, pleading his case to the camera. “This makes no sense. What the (bleep). I’m literally the epitome of what you want!”
Just like that, a heel was born.
