Larry approaching category two hurricane strength | Loop Cayman Islands - Loop News Cayman

Hurricane Larry is growing bigger and stronger as it churns in the tropical Atlantic Ocean, according to the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC).

In the 11 am update, the NHC said Larry’s maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher gusts.

Larry is expected to strengthen further and become a major hurricane this weekend.

Swells generated by Larry are expected to cause rip currents and high surf in the Lesser Antilles on Sunday.

There are no coastal warnings in effect for Larry.

The hurricane is located about 1,410 miles (2,270 KM) east of the Leeward Islands.

NHC said Larry is moving toward the west-northwest at around 16 mph (26 km/h) and this motion is expected to continue over the next few days before it makes a turn to the northwest early next week.
