Alvechurch bike crash inspires social media campaign | Bromsgrove Advertiser - Bromsgrove Advertiser

A SOCIAL media campaign has been created to give cyclists an identity after a man involved in a car and bike collision died in Alvechurch last year.

Joanne Ness from Moseley has set up a campaign named ‘More Than a Cyclist’ highlighting to motorists that cyclists are a person not an ‘inconvenience on the road’.

Friend, James Middleton, and Martyn Gall were involved in a collision with a car on the A441 in November 2020.

The incident left James fighting for his life in hospital whilst Martyn tragically died, leaving behind his wife and two daughters.

This acted as a catalyst for Joanne, who knew something had to be done to protect the public.

“I was so shocked a young man had lost his life and James was fighting for his. There talks of turning his life support machine off – it was just awful,” said Joanne.

“Last year, myself and my partner were accosted by a driver on the road and the driver clearly wanted to cause us harm.

“After this, I just had a lightbulb moment and knew that something needed to be done but did not know how to execute it.”

Joanne aged 49 is a member of Gorilla Cycle Club in Kings Heath so approached owner James Connelly for advice.

She added: “Luckily, we have a lot of talented people in the cycle club, so we started a social media campaign with no budget and all of us volunteering our time.

“There is a team of six of us and I am so grateful for everyone who has gave up their time to help me grow this project.”
