Yesterday, Miss Cayman Islands Universe pageant fans could be seen on the roadsides with placards, displaying printed photos and wearing t-shirts reflecting their support for various contestants in the upcoming Miss Cayman Islands Universe pageant. I felt like this was the type of cheering-on that Caymanians should do on a regular basis to encourage and promote each other. It was refreshing.

In my mind, the environment elevated to one of complete unity when the Miss Cayman Islands Universe motorcade arrived at Heritage Field in East End. A massive crowd was awaiting the contestants there. Most appeared to be positive and supportive.

I asked myself why this type of unity and encouragement were not publicly displayed by our people all the time. For example, there is no rally or placards on a large scale when it comes to the discussion of unemployment or hungry children. In fact, many people go silent when it comes to other societal issues.

The lesson I learned from yesterday was that Caymanians have the energy to rally, to be organized, coordinate and execute when their support is for a common interest. The question is how to create this common interest in other areas (education, crime, mental health and economic equality) and get people as fired up as they are for a beauty pageant.

I think the answer is that once we see that our fates are actually intertwined with respect to other matters, unity and support will be the norm rather than division. With this realization,...
