CHICO, Calif. — Coronavirus (COVID) cases are surging in the Northstate and a local Chico emergency room (ER) doctor has taken to social media to let people know about the seriousness of the virus and encourage them to get vaccinated.
Doctor Steven Zlotowski tells KRCR’s Daisy Caballero this second COVID surge is worse than the initial surge we saw last year around the holidays. And he now hopes people start taking this virus seriously and get vaccinated as hospitalizations have climbed to an all-time high these last two weeks.
At this point in time, if you’re not vaccinated, it’s my firm belief it's going to hunt you down and it’s going to find you,” said Dr. Zlotowski.
He has spent the COVID-19 pandemic documenting his experience dealing with patients and trying to inform the public about the risk.
During his most recent video, he asks the community to get vaccinated if they’re not already as they’re experiencing their worst COVID surge yet.
As of Friday, we are about 25% higher than we were ever in the winter—in terms of the number of people in the hospital,” said Dr. Zlotowski. “ 91% of them are not vaccinated. And of those 9% that are vaccinated, none of them have been sick enough to make it to the intensive care unit (ICU).
While this is an extremely taxing time for hospital staff, doctors, and nurses, Dr. Zlotowski says it's even more difficult to come face-to-face with a patient who wishes they were vaccinated but it’s too late.
