During last week’s discussion in Finance Committee regarding the approval of $200,000 for policy advice, governance and ministerial support services, the Minister for Education, District Administration and Lands, Juliana O’Connor-Connolly was asked whether, in relation to the approval of the funding, the wearing of masks will be mandatory for students returning to school.
The Minister for Education responded by saying that that decision had not been made for government schools, however, there is an ongoing and existing policy for government schools that students must wear masks while traveling on school buses.
Obviously once we open [our borders] up, the science will be looked at, the condition of where we are worldwide as well as locally with COVID would have to be considered and a decision [regarding general mask wearing at government schools] would be taken at the time.
The Minister of Education added.
The Minister for Education further indicated that the Ministry’s actions would be pre-emptive in relation to any decision regarding masks for students within government schools.
The Leader of the Opposition, Roy McTaggart weighed-in and asked whether “government provided masks to students up to this point.”
The Minister for Education confirmed that “some parents do send their children with [masks], but we also have masks available on the bus that the bus warden can dispend… and there are some at the school as well [that were] ordered before.”
