WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —
Mount Tabor High School students returned to class Tuesday after a shooting on campus less than a week prior left a student dead and a school community rattled by the traumatizing experience.
“It went well,” said Brent Campbell, a spokesperson for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, on the return to campus Tuesday. “One of the things we kept hearing was parents telling their students that they love them.”
Campbell said district leaders, members of the school board, alumni and other community members helped welcome students back to campus Tuesday morning. The school closed in the days following the shooting.

“We love our students, and we will do everything possible to keep them safe, but also ease them back into normalcy,” Campbell said. “Normalcy is a part of healing.”
Campbell said a moment of silence was held for Miller Tuesday morning. He said teachers were also given instructions on how to broach conversations about the shooting less than a week prior. Emotional support dogs and a crisis team were on campus, too.
“This community has been amazing in its response,” Campbell said.
At nearby Bagel Station, a popular spot among Mount Tabor students, customers are also rallying around their neighbors.
